The Left and Right Paradigm is Shifting to Up and Down: This One Is Serious
Christianity, Cory Truax, Political Correctness
I have known for quite a while that one of the many sub-conflicts within the larger battle between the Left and Right is the battle between the spiritual and the secular. However, I once saw that struggle coequal with the skirmishes between capitalism and socialism, laissez-faire and Keynesian economics theories, civil libertarianism and big government, and aggressive foreign policy and isolationism. Lately, though, I am beginning to surmise that the clash between the traditionalists and the secular-humanists transcends all other battles. Indeed, this fight, I have concluded, is the central one in our body politic.
For reasons I have yet to discern, secularists and what I call “anti-theists” have been more aggressive than I have ever seen them in the last month or so. Specifically, three events have me confounded, angry, and troubled. All illustrate several disturbing truths. First, Christians are, in practice, open game for discrimination and hate. Government is unwilling to protect Christians, and Christians themselves–intimidated by lies about a separation of church and state– sit by idly while secularists attack the underpinnings of religious liberty.
Second, a breed of atheist that heretofore has remained marginalized has taken a vanguard role in the atheist movement. These folks are not satisfied with intellectual opposition to theism and wish to engage in discourse. These malignant operatives are insistent upon hostile confrontation and destruction of all belief systems.
Sound dire? Think I’m over-reacting? Let me give you the three illustrations, and then you can be the judge.
Uhh, yeah, is this History? Great, We Need a Re-Write
You likely saw this week that the new Capitol Visitor’s Center opened. And you saw the obligatory reporting on the fact that it was completed years past due and millions over budget. You also heard about the dumbest man in the Senate, Harry Reid, saying he was excited because now he wouldn’t have to smell the tourists.
But you may have missed the central and vitally significant part of that story.
In that new visitor’s center, tourists will not find one vestige of one of the country’s most important ingredients and traditions: God. And friends, the absence of acknowledging the spiritual and historically verifiable evangelical nature of America was not an accident. Leaving God out was a deliberate and unjustified attempt to secularize American further through actively omitting Christian symbols from displays.
For example, on the actual Speaker’s Chair in the House of Representatives (where Nancy Pelosi sits), the words “In God We Trust” are etched elegantly into the back. In the Visitor’s Center’s replica of that chair, you will find no inscription.
Moreover, those responsible for the display PHOTO-SHOPPED the phrase OUT of pictures of the ACTUAL chair.
Another display proclaims, “The National Motto: e pluribus unum” (meaning, “of many, one”). Problem? That’s not the national motto. The national motto of the United States of America is, “In God We Trust.”
Those two examples speak volumes about the aggressive anti-religion agenda innate in much of elite culture, but they do not speak as loudly as the absence of more displays and dedications to the demonstrably religious history of America.
And what are Christians on both the Left and Right doing? Nothing.
That’s Not Equal Time
You also likely heard this week about the “Free Speech Zone” (what a ludicrous concept) at the Washington State Capitol. In this zone sits a nativity scene, featuring the namesake of the federal holiday over 94% of the country celebrates: Jesus Christ.
In response–as if a NATIVITY needs a response–to that traditional exhibit, which serves only to inspire those who practice in some form and to some extent Christianity, an anti-theist group has erected an absolutely acerbic, malevolent sign, not just celebrating their Winter Solstice but upbraiding and demeaning all Christians and practitioners of Christmas.
Their sign celebrates nothing; it insults people. The display has no redeeming, endearing, or ANY value whatsoever.
The coward Governor of Washington has declined to act on the hateful sign, implying that the atheists deserve equality, and allowing them this privilege is equality. Let’s dismantle that illogic with a quick sweep.
First, that’s not equality. Equality would be allowing a display of the same nature of the Nativity scene. A Nativity scene celebrates and recognizes the central pillar of a holiday. And despite one anti-theist describing all nativities as “hate speech,” nothing about the Nativity scene isolates one group of people for ridicule and revulsion.
Actual equality would be allowing the anti-theists to design a display celebrating their god: humans and nature. The group could have easily constructed something to add to the spirit of the season and not verbally assault an entire group of people.
Furthermore, let me further demonstrate the intellectual bankruptcy the Governor of Washington and the anti-theists have on this matter with a few analogies.
Imagine that on Martin Luther King Day a group of black civil liberty activists placed a dedication to the REASON for the holiday, Martin Luther King, on display. In response, a group of some sort puts up a sign calling King a fraud, an adulterer, and agitator. Would the Governor call it equal time then?
If that God-hating group had the intestinal fortitude to put up a sign equally insulting to Islamic believers on Ramadan, would the Governor call that equal time? Or would she step up to protect Muslims from being attacked?
By the way, you do notice, though, that the atheists and anti-theists attack Christians, right? Not Muslims. The pusillanimous cowards—wait, let’s call them what they are: sissies—know that the media and modern culture have guilt-tripped, bullied, and cow-towed Christians into just shutting up and taking abuse, so they attack us.
Let me quickly say to the atheists: I won’t be intimidated. I will stand for truth—both the truth of the Gospel and the truth of history. You are liars and cowards, and you will be defeated.
But again, with blatant and now government-approved invective hurled at Christians, the Christians just take it.
Celebrity + Retard = Celebutard (And what celebrity isn’t a retard?)
The final disconcerting story I want to share you comes from the heart of intellectual and moral depravity: Hollywood.
After suffering an embarrassing defeat in California’s Proposition 8 battle to define marriage as one man and one woman, Hollywood celebrities and homosexual activists have gone on full-fledged, bizarre, and sometimes seemingly insane attacks.
The latest installment in their attacks on believers of any religion—as if religion is what cost them that election—is a production entitled, “Prop 8: The musical.”
The musical features an insolent portrayal of Christians as menacing theocrats who seek to destroy all homosexuals. Even further, the musical presents a depiction of Jesus Christ—played by Jack Black—chastising Christians for opposing homosexual marriage and attacking with caustic and irrational arguments the Bible itself.
The writers and producers threw aside even the slightest pretense of faithfully or academically treating the Bible. They mock it and intentionally ignored doing even the most perfunctory research on its doctrines.
The musical’s contention was, in essence, Christians should support homosexual marriage because Leviticus says eating shellfish is bad and stoning an adulterer is good. Is there a better example of a non-sequiter? Or a better example of the liberal elite’s abhorrence for religion, Christians, and America?
Let me reiterate something. Once again, these enlightened few would NEVER do this to Islam. Why? Once again, they’re cowards.
Let me also quickly add that opposition to homosexual marriage is not, at large, a religious opposition (Consider the secular arguments against homosexual marriage written here).
And finally, the culture’s response to this hateful musical? Silence.
Conclusion
I am rarely one to call for unity in the country. My love for capitalism extends to ideas. I believe our divergent philosophies will sharpen all thinking and that the best ideas will consequently rise to victory.
But for the cause of defending the incontrovertible truth regarding America’s traditional and Evangelical history, I believe we need and already have a great deal of unity.
Newt Gingrich’s group American Solutions has published polls illustrating that even a large majority of registered DEMOCRATS support “In God We Trust” staying on currency, “Under God” staying in the Pledge of Allegiance, and defending public displays of religion in government.
Our problem is that majority is largely silent. Institutional lies about the “separation of church and state” have Christians afraid to speak up and stand up to anti-theists and say, “No! You cannot now and cannot ever openly and without consequence insult Christianity or defile and lie about its history. We will not stand for it! When you do it, we will oppose you on every front and expose you for the liars and hate-mongers you are.”
We can have some polite discourse with run of the mill atheists, but this new breed of religion-despising zealots cannot and should not be dealt with. These are the folks that deserve absolute marginalization and defeat. And I intend on defeating them.
Will you join me, conservative? Will you join me, liberal who disagrees with me on taxes, judicial philosophy, and foreign policy but will not stand for discrimination and hate of your religion? Will you join me atheist who is embarrassed by the antics of your peers? Will you join me?
More and more, I see it as apparent: a fight of epic proportion looms; not between the Left and Right, but the Up and Down.

Romans 12.14-21 is a good read.
You mentioned that you have noticed an increased vitality amongst the most vitriolic and proactive atheists. I have been noticing the same thing for several years now and it seems quite obvious to me that the internet has been an indespensible tool in the resurgence and/or spread of such thought.
Check out any social-networking site that revolves around shared content (i.e. Digg, Propeller, Videosift, etc…) The stories, videos, etc… that rise to the top are almost-exclusively left-leaning, anti-religion, and/or naturalistic in nature. In fact, I believe Richard Dawkins’ popularity amongst those on sites like the ones mentioned above helped his star to rise significantly.
Also, I maintain my belief that Christians/conservatives have done themselves no favors by toeing the secularist line of “any argument grounded in religious thought is inherently invalid.”
